Politicking

Ah, Cambridge in the fall. A time for golden leaves, blustery winds, student protests, and possibly assassinations.

What's that?, you ask. Assassinations?

Shh, I say. Just wait.

The first order of business: Focus on the Family, whose primary purpose is to tightly circumscribe the civil rights of American citizens by peering into their bedrooms, is holding a conference in Boston called "Love Won Out." Its purpose? To "educate" around 1000 attendees on the evils of homosexuality and the merits of the "ex-gay" movement. One of its key speakers is Anne Heche's mother. (If you recall, Anne Heche had a much-publicized relationship with uber-awesome uber-lesbian Ellen Degeneres before marrying--gasp!--a man. Of course, Anne couldn't be--gasp!--bisexual instead of "reformed," could she?) Many of my friends are going to protest (Tremont Temple Baptist Church, 8am). I'm considering going, but only so long as they're protesting the content of the conference and not the right of the organizers to hold said conference. Because while I support the protesters' right to protest, I also support the conference-goers' right to attend and to speak against the protesters, and the protesters' right to speak against their speaking against them, ad infinitum. It's all very dizzying, but the point is that the one thing I'm not going to protest is FotF's right to be stupid and anti-American.

Finally, we return to the subject of assassination. As it happens, my roommate may work for a lawyer who may have filed a federal lawsuit that may make certain people very angry. And my roommate's name may be attached to some of the briefs. In other words, I'm waiting for a guy with a Middle Eastern accent and a tommy gun to show up on my doorstep.
